Our Story

Every great love begins with an unexpected conversation.

We met debating politics on social media. I had a podcast, and Gary was an anonymous caller or listener whose intellect immediately caught my attention. I secretly hoped he would not call in with one of his tough questions—not because I could not answer, but because I was already feeling his mind, and it was incredibly sexy to me.

Gary made the first move. At the time, I was raising teenagers, working, and attending school, simply trying to keep everything afloat. His persistence gave me one less thing to carry and one good thing to look forward to. Eventually, I arranged for us to meet in Chicago for his birthday.

He remembered that I wanted someone romantic enough to hold my hand while crossing the street.

Years later, beneath the stars aboard the Creole Queen in New Orleans, Gary asked me to marry him. We said yes not only to a wedding, but to doing life together—with love, laughter, legacy, family, culture, faith, and limitless possibility.

“When I saw you, I fell in love, and you smiled because you knew.”
— Arrigo Boito, Falstaff
